Demand for vans on the rise

How D Pickering Limited can support trends in new LCV sales with a reliable vehicle transport service.

With the UK van market flying in 2023 so far, demand for our vehicle transport services is rising too.

At the beginning of April, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, (SMMT) reported registrations for new light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations rose by 17.3% to almost 50,000 units – and this was the third consecutive month of growth.

Registrations for mid-size vans rose 66.3%, while sales of 4x4s increased by a whopping 183.4%.

In the first three months of 2023, sales for the year to date were up 17.4% compared to the first quarter in the previous year – and even though that remains 15.1% below pre-pandemic levels and some erratic supply chain issues continue, we are definitely seeing more vans and 4x4s on our roads this year.

Hopefully it’s a sign that we’re getting back to business as usual following the detrimental impact of the pandemic – something that we’re seeing too in terms of the number of vehicle transport enquiries we are receiving for vans and 4x4s.

What’s more, the figures suggest that the demand for larger vans is much more buoyant than for LCVs up to two tonnes, which was actually down 24.6% in March.

The demand for larger vans, pickups and 4x4s is no problem for D Pickering Ltd when it comes to transporting vehicles of this size.

As well as 30 years’ experience in the business, we also have our own fleet of specially designed transporters and we can safely transport wider and taller vehicles.

The SMMT also reported deliveries of battery electric vans continued to grow, up by 32.7%, as businesses move towards their net zero targets and ambitions.

With this drive towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly vehicles demand for vehicle transport services is also likely to increase, something which we greatly welcome.

This will be significantly helped if infrastructure is improved, with more charging points that are both suitable in size and location for van use.

The SMMT reports that the publication last week of a Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate will “compel a rapid increase in the sale of zero emission vans and is due to come into force in less than nine months”.

This month, National Highways also unveiled a new strategy for Britain’s roads which includes the introduction of more electric vehicle charging points, so let’s hope we see some improvements on the availability of charging points, that will compel more people to buy electric vehicles.
